Bitwarden in Linux – Linux Hint

December 12, 2020 by tuio

In modern times, the world has made considerable technological progress. New and advanced technologies have made people’s lives easier. Not so long ago, people used landlines to communicate with each other, but today there are devices such as smartphones. Such achievements have truly revolutionized people’s lives and go beyond the concept of communication. The influence of technology on our lives is so great that all aspects of modern life are merged with it. Whether it’s our finances or our social profile, they all depend heavily on technology.

However, this dependence on us has made us much more vulnerable to data leakage. The real cases of Adobe and eBay clearly show how serious the problem of cyber security is. Cyber attacks are also on the increase and to make matters worse, more advanced attacks and new types are being developed every day. Although Linux is much more secure than Windows and other operating systems, it remains vulnerable to viruses.

It is therefore essential to take measures to protect our machines against these safety attacks. One of the great solutions is the use of password managers. The subject of our discussion in this article is therefore Bitwarden, an open source password manager.

What is Batwarden?

Bitwarden is a free and open source password manager available for Linux and all other major operating systems such as Windows and MacOS. Bitwarden also has extensions for all major web browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge and others. There are even applications available for Android and IOS mobile devices. Bitwarden offers a very user-friendly and easy to use interface, making the graphical user interface a good choice. It works by storing your passwords and other sensitive data in an encrypted memory, which itself is protected by a master password. Bitvarden offers its users both free and paid accounts, the latter have different plans and are all cheaper than the market. However, the free version of Bitwarden is also a very remarkable choice because it offers a variety of features not found in other password managers.

BitwardenInstallation

Before proceeding with the Bitwarden installation process, it is important to know that you must be registered under an account to use this program. Just go to the official Bitwarden website, click the Create Free Account option, and enter your details to create an account.

When you have finished creating your account, it is also advisable to install the Bitwarden extension in your web browser to automatically fill in your registration information. You can install it by going to the official extension and add-on page of your browser, or by clicking on the options available on the official Bitwarden website.

There are two main methods to install Bitwarden on your computer. These will be discussed in the next section.

Setting the bit value with AppImage

To install Bitwarden with AppImage, reopen the official Bitwarden website. Then select the download option at the top of the page and click on the Linux segment under Desktop.

This loads the AppImage on your Linux computer. In order to use Bitwarden, you must first give it permission to run the file. You can do this by right-clicking the icon and selecting Properties.

Next, open the Permissions tab and click on the square box next to Allow as a program to make your AppImage executable.

You can now open Bitwarden by double clicking on the AppImage file.

Configuration of bit transmission with lock

Another way to install Bitwarden on your computer is by using snaps. Snaps are applications that contain all the dependencies that are combined in a software package. This avoids the difficulty of having to install the outbuildings separately with your application. To install Bitwarden with snaps, simply execute the following command in the terminal:

$ sudo snap installation bitwarden

Use of Bit Rooms

After downloading and opening Bitwarden, a login menu appears in front of your screen. Enter your registration details to start Bitwarden. Please note that you can create your Bitwarden account from here if you have not already done so.

After your connection, Bitwarden takes you to your safe, where all your passwords and confidential data are stored.

You can manually add objects to the archive by clicking on the plus symbol, as shown in the figure above. A window will then open in which you can enter all the information relating to the account you wish to add.

You can also change the type of item to be added by selecting options from the drop-down menu, as shown in Figure

It is important to note that the details of the item you enter in this window will change depending on the type you want to add.

When adding accounts to the deposit, you can also use the password generation option in Bitwarden, which automatically generates a secure password for you.

To keep track of all these passwords, you can use the Password History option on the View tab, where all generated passwords are stored.

You can also synchronize your account with your web browser by going to the File section and selecting the Sync by default option.

Bitwarden even makes it possible to export the memory with the Export Memory option, as shown in the figure above. The exported files are in json or csv format.

Then why Batwarden?

There is no doubt that the Internet has revolutionized the world by becoming an integral part of our daily lives. Because we are now heavily dependent on technology in our daily work, this dependence has paved the way for cyber security problems, leading to serious identity theft and data leaks. Bitwarden is an excellent choice to protect your computer from such threats because it provides users with a way to protect their data and maintain the security of their systems.
