It is not always clear whether it is safe to wash dishes, plates or bowls in the dishwasher. This applies in particular if the product is older, if the safety logo of the dishwasher cannot be found and if the product is not listed on the Internet. So, you’re a little tense!
In this article we look at what makes the dishwasher safer and how we can say it anyway.
Confusion over dishwasher logos
Unlike other kitchens, there is no Safety Dishwasher logo that can be searched and found reliably.
It differs from other standards in that a standardisation body usually designs a recognisable logo which is added to the design (or at least to the packaging) to confirm its status. This creates a small dilemma for the population.
Find safety in the dishwasher Logo
Look for the dishwasher logo or safety symbol :
- Pots and pans – Look at the handle, because that’s where the symbol is most likely to be found.
- Plates and bowls – the bottom is the best place to look.
- Packaging – This can be confirmed by the original packaging of the product.
Dishwasher safe under certain conditions
An article may only fit on the top shelf of a stand-alone or built-in dishwasher. Some versions of the characters indicate this.
Conversely, pots and pans are often only placed on the bottom shelf or basket in the dishwasher. Common sense must be applied here (there must be no perceptible character to indicate it).
It is also necessary to carry out an overall assessment of the types of articles that can be used in the dishwasher and those that cannot. So, with or without the symbol, you’ll probably do the right thing.
Pots and pans
The verdict: It’s safe if it’s made of steel, otherwise you’ll avoid the dishwasher.
It is difficult to decipher what is safe in a dishwasher with pots and pans. Most of them will not have symbols on the box for long trips and are unlikely to have symbols referring to this product.
Steel pots
Steel pots and pans can be safely cleaned in the dishwasher.
It’s about whether he has a pen or something that can change that. Is there a symbol on the pen itself?
Does the aluminium contain mixed with other materials that can scratch?
Cast iron frying pans
The cast iron cannot be washed in the dishwasher whether you find the symbol or not.
The protective herb applied to the cast iron pan is lost when you wash it in the dishwasher. It’ll rust too.
Stoves with non-stick coating
The non-stick frying pan is covered with a protective layer that allows the food to glide easily while cooking. Just like cast iron, the frying pan is ruined if you put it in the dishwasher.
Aluminium kettles
A light aluminium pan will scratch the dishwasher due to the corrosive nature of the cleaning solution(s) used.
This also applies to strain gauges, sieves or aluminium cheese grids.
Pay attention: Stainless steel cutlery is generally dishwasher safe.
Cookware and bakery wares
The verdict: It’s probably safe.
By this we mean things like transparent bowls, jugs, etc. from Pyrex. In addition, other similar items are usually placed in the oven to prepare a dish for baking pasta, etc.
If it is something like Pyrex, it can usually be washed in the dishwasher. This kind of kitchenware is sufficient to illustrate this point.
Cake and cake trays can be made of aluminium, but they are too fragile and therefore probably won’t last.
Ceramics
The verdict: I’m sure it is.
Ceramics for crockery such as plates and bowls are made in a specific way, making them dishwasher safe.
Their shelf life is extended during the production process. They usually get a glaze, which also helps.
China Cup
The verdict: Sure, but watch out for the jewels!
You might think a porcelain coffee cup in the dishwasher is completely harmless.
Of course the cup itself will survive!
However, the image on the page is sealed with a vacuum cleaner to stay in place and will not survive the strong action of detergents and cleaning products.
Imagine a T-shirt being washed in a high temperature washing machine, with the logo on the front fading or slowly fading over time. It is basically the same as vacuum sealing a coffee cup to protect the design.
Wooden cutting boards
The verdict: Don’t put it in the dishwasher.
Wood causes various problems in the dishwasher, so it can be washed by hand.
It changes in size and shape due to moisture and heat during the washing cycle.
Moreover, if it is designed to be a flat and useful surface like a cutting block, it risks being scratched like a devil, making it much less beautiful.
Crystal and glassware
The verdict: Add glasses, but avoid high quality crystal dishes.
Crystal bowls should never be put in the dishwasher.
With the glassware, which is more difficult to survive, everything will probably be fine. However, the more sensitive the issue, the greater the risk. A lower production speed, however, helps to make the glass stiffer than it appears at first glance.
Some high-quality dishwashers (e.g. Miele and Bosch) have a special glass protection function.
Plastics
The verdict: Mixed opinions.
Plastic is a complicated thing.
Dishes, if carefully prepared, can indeed be put in the dishwasher, but this is quite unusual. As a rule, this will be an indicator.
In general, however, plastics are not processed at higher temperatures. Often they are not strong, on the slimming side, and will deform or break under heat and pressure.
Poor quality plastic products can also contain chemicals (especially old ones) that can leak from the final product into the dishwasher.
To achieve this, it certainly makes sense to replace all plastics in the kitchen with phthalate- and BPA-free versions. However, it is not always advisable to put plastic in the dishwasher.
Finally, there will not always be a logo or symbol that can be relied upon to identify all dishwasher-safe and non-dishwasher-safe items (especially older items).
Kitchen knife
The verdict: Avoid them if you want to keep them clean!
You might think kitchen knives accidentally go in the dishwasher because forks and knives go in, but the most important thing with kitchen knives is that they have to keep a sharp edge when they cut.
By putting the good quality knives into the wax, he scrambles the edge, which has to be sharpened every time. Don’t do that!
