Wi-Fi is now the world’s first wireless connection in the office or at home. People can share files, but it’s hard for large files, so even a whole hard drive isn’t enough. As a result, the speed decreases when the data passes through the audience, which may not be interesting at all. Don’t worry, because files can be transferred between two computers using a LAN cable.
The data transfer via a LAN cable, however, saves you the hassle. If the files you want to move are small, you can do this over Wi-Fi if both devices are on the same network. In this article you will learn how to switch from one computer to another using a LAN cable.
File transfer via LAN cable
The Ethernet cable simplifies the whole process by transferring data at high speed. For example, a USB 2.0 cable can support speeds of 480 Mbps, which is quite slow. This is why data transfer via a LAN cable is the best option. CAT5e cables can support speeds up to 1000 Mbps.
Why you should use aLAN cable
The main advantage of a LAN cable or Ethernet cable is that you can transfer files between computers faster than with traditional USB sticks or Wi-Fi. If you want to share large amounts of data, this is the best way to do it on all major versions of Windows : Windows 7, 8 and 10.
However, let’s see how to transfer files with a LAN cable. But before you do that, you must first create a restore point: if something goes wrong, you can restore the PC to its original state.

- Two Windows computers
- LAN cable as CAT 5
- Because it’s your first time, you have to be patient….

Step one: Use a LAN cable to connect computers/PCs.
The first step is to connect the two computers using a LAN cable. Every LAN cable works, whether it is crossover or Ethernet. Both lines use the same connection with only minor functional differences.
Step two: Allows network sharing on both PCs
Now that the two computers are connected, enable the network sharing option on both computers to enable file sharing or exchange. You need to repeat the step-by-step process on both computers. Click on the Start menu and find the Control Panel, then click on it to open it.
A new control panel window opens, select Network and Internet.
Another dialog box opens, click Network and Sharing Center. If this is not the first time you transfer files between two computers, you can type the following information into the search box after clicking the Start button: Control PanelNetwork Control Panel and Internet Sharing and Networking Center, then press Enter. The command redirects you from the control panel to the Network and Sharing Center.
On the left side of the Network and Sharing Center window, go to Edit Advanced Sharing Settings. Three network options are displayed: Public, private and the whole network. A public network is a shared connection in public places such as airports, cafes or restaurants; a private network is your home network or organization, while a full network is both. We recommend connecting them to all networks for seamless connection and operation.
Click on the drop-down icon to expand all networks. Now enable the public sharing feature to open up computers to access files via the LAN cable. Disable password sharing, so you don’t have to re-enter the password every time you try to access it from another computer.
However, this can pose a significant risk to your network. Therefore, make sure that you activate password protection at the end of the process. If you disable password protection, other computers or people can access the network as shared data without the need for a password.
This is not a safe practice because you share your data with people you don’t trust, but this time you make an exception because you transfer files between two PCs you trust. When finished, save the changes and repeat the same process for the second PC.
Step three: Installation of a static IP
Now that you have enabled network sharing on both PCs, it’s time to put them on the same network. Set a static IP address of the same class on both PCs by following the instructions below.
1. Click the Start button and locate the control panel to configure a static IP address. Go to Network and Internet and press Network Sharing Center. You can also right-click on the Start menu and then on Network Connections.
2. The following window shows the active connections. In this case, the Ethernet or LAN cable connects the two PCs. Click on the Ethernet link. A new dialog box opens in which you have to click on the Properties button.
3. Select Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4) from the following context menu. Click Properties to open another dialog box.
4. At this point, you need to configure two PCs with different IP addresses.
Touch the next IP address on the first computer. then enter the following information;
[tie_list type=checklist]
- IP address : 192.168.1.1
- Subnet mask: 225.225.225.0
- Standard Gateway : 192.168.1.2
[/tie_list]
It may not be necessary to use the above IP addresses, as you can use any Class A or B IP address. If you are not sure what these IP addresses mean, stick to the example above.
You have to repeat the process on the second PC, but reverse the values of the IP address and the default gateway.
[tie_list type=checklist]
- IP address : 192.168.1.2
- Subnet mask: 225.225.225.0
- Standard Gateway : 192.168.1.1
[/tie_list]
The above procedure leaves the subnet mask unchanged and changes the IP address.
Now open the file explorer in your window and select the Network tab on the left side of the window.
I hope you’ve taken care of everything as indicated above. Both PCs should now appear in this network window. Click on the icon of the other computer and view the file. However, before viewing the files, you will need to make a different setting.
Step four: Moving the folder
We assume that your cable connection is correct, that the sharing option is also enabled, and that the IP address configuration is correct. It’s time to transfer files between two computers using a LAN cable. Before sharing, we recommend that you create a new folder in which you copy and paste all the files you want to share.
Now right click on the folder you want to share. In the context menu, navigate to the Grant access option and then select Specific persons.
3. From the drop-down menu in the File Sharing window, select Everyone, and then click Add next to it. Finally, you can click on the Share button.
After sharing, the next window displays the location of the folder on the network.
The file transfer between two computers using the LAN cable is now complete and you can access the folder on the other computer. Start the network panel and select the name of the other PC.
The file you just shared is now visible. You can now open the folder and use the normal method (copy and paste) to transfer the data. The same can be repeated on another computer.
B Summary
The above recommendations only work between Windows PCs. For Mac or Linux you need another exchange agent such as. B. Samba. Leave us your questions and we will answer you.
