WordPress Dashboard & Settings Page

December 14, 2020 by tuio

The WordPress dashboard is an important page for website administrators. In this article in the WordPress 101 series we learn how to read and configure the WordPress dashboard.

If you don’t know how to configure WordPress, we have written a detailed step-by-step installation guide for WordPress. Take a look at this.

WordPress Dashboard

The WordPress Dashboard is the home page for webmasters. All important information about the site is available here, such as the number of messages, pages, comments, awaiting comments, errors, status of the site, etc.

‘ Sample website – WordPress

The screenshot above shows the main WordPress dashboard. This is what it looks like when you install WordPress. But if the administrator doesn’t want to see a certain widget, he can disable it.

Click on the Options button on the screen and drag to display the options to show or hide the dashboard widgets. For example, you can hide the welcome widget after reading it.

WordPress User Dashboard

The WordPress dashboard does not stay the same. As more and more plugins will be installed in the future, some of them will be able to add their own widgets to the toolbar.

WordPressSettings

After visiting the WordPress Dashboard, the second part of WordPress that is important to know is the WordPress settings section.

General parameters

Click on the Settings button in the sidebar and the next page General Settings will open. If you change the general settings, this will affect the entire website, so be careful when changing any of these settings.

Here all the adjustments are quite intense. Here you can change the site name, tagline, WordPress URL, site address, enable/disable membership, default role for new users, site language, time zone, date and time format.

Be careful if you change the WordPress address or the address of your website, as this may damage your website.

WordPress General Settings

Recording parameters

Using the recording parameters, you can set the default category for new messages. The default setting is No Category. This setting allows you to make new settings and set them as default.

WordPress supports multiple message formats, including video, audio, images, links, status, and more. The default mail format allows users to set the default mail format for new messages.

WordPress recording settings

WordPress also allows users to publish news via email on their website. Send an e-mail and it will be published on the website. Please make sure that this letter is not made available to anyone, as any letter received at this address will be published on the website.

To configure the sending of e-mail, enter a mail server, user name and password in the write settings.

Reading parameters

From the playback settings you can configure the home page, the number of blog posts and tapes to be displayed and prevent search engines from indexing this site.

You can view the latest blog articles or create a separate page for the homepage.

WordPress Reading Parameters

If you don’t get any visitors from search engines, even if your website contains a lot of content, make sure to disable the Search Engine Visibility option on the Read Preferences page.

Discussion settings

With the discussion settings you can adjust the functionality of the blog comments. Here you can activate or deactivate a comment on a message or deactivate the message automatically after a few days. This section is also quite simple and does not require any additional knowledge to understand it.

If you want to use third party chat systems such as Disqus, you can leave it at that. Once you have set up a third party system, WordPress’ default commenting system is disabled.

Media Settings

The media settings allow you to specify the size of thumbnails, medium images, and large images. Most premium themes will manage their sketches in their own way. Do not change these settings if you are using a premium theme.

WordPress Media Settings

Permaline Parameters

Permalink is probably the second most important parameter in WordPress. Here you can define how WordPress should generate messages, categories and URL tags. I recommend setting Postname as the default link format to generate a clean and easy to access URL.

WordPress Permanent Link Settings

Privacy settings

Finally, there are the privacy settings. Here you can set up a privacy policy page for the website. By default WordPress creates a privacy policy page that can be configured to be visible under /privacy policy. You can also create a new page and install it as a privacy policy page.
